Peteraf and Shanley（1997）は同じグループに属する企業は互いに準拠やベンチマークをするとしている。しかし社会学的には準拠集団とは「そうなりたい」と思う動機で相手を観察し，仲間性のあるグループを形成する（見田他，1988）ものである。
