【Skill 6】Listen for the differences between two things based on expressions that have opposite meanings
From the two expressions following は (contrastive marker), 場合 (in the case of), and ほうは (contrastive marker), which are opposite in meaning, listen for the differences between the two things before は (contrastive marker), 場合, and ほうは (contrastive marker).
In the following audio, the expressions 血圧を上昇させる (raises blood pressure) and 血圧を低下させる (lowers blood pressure) following は (contrastive marker) are opposites in meaning. From this, the difference between 交感神経 (sympathetic nervous system) and 副交感神経 (parasympathetic nervous system) before は (contrastive marker) is explained.
■ 交感神経は血圧を上昇させます。一方、副交感神経は血圧を低下させます。
(The sympathetic nervous system raises blood pressure. On the other hand, the parasympathetic nervous system lowers blood pressure.)
In the next audio, the expressions 「日中に優位になる」 (becomes dominant during the day) and 「夜に優位になる」 (becomes dominant at night) following 「は」 (contrastive marker) are opposites in meaning. From this, the difference between 「交感神経」 (sympathetic nervous system) and 「副交感神経」 (parasympathetic nervous system) before 「は」 is explained.
■ 交感神経は日中に優位になる一方、副交感神経は夜に優位になります。 (The sympathetic nervous system becomes dominant during the day, whereas the parasympathetic nervous system becomes dominant at night.)
